The mountain achieved worldwide notoriety when it claimed the life of British cyclist Tom Simpson, who died here on the 13th July 1967 from heat exhaustion. The road to the summit has an average gradient of 7.4%. Starting in Bédoin the climb is easy (3.9% over 5.8km) until Saint-Estève where the 16 remaining kilometres have an average gradient of 8.9%. The last kilometres can be a real energy sapper due to the strong violent winds you get around the summit.
